Listed below are some
of our standard wire rope lubricants for general and specialty applications. This is not a
complete list of the available wire rope lubricants. If the lubricant you require is not
available please utilize the Request
for Recommendation button or if you need a product equivalent utilize the Find-a-Product button. Wire
Rope Lubricants may be divided into the following two categories: low viscosity
penetrating oils and high viscosity greases. Each product type has its advantages and
disadvantages that may be modified with additives to provide the desired results.
When evaluating the different wire rope lubricants it is important to be aware of the
desired lubricant characteristics, operation environment and the type of wire rope - is it
moving wire rope or a standing wire rope?
Low Viscosity Penetrating Oil
These lubricants are excellent at penetrating into the wire rope to provide corrosion
protection by displacing moisture within the wire rope and providing a corrosion
preventing film on the metals surface. It is important these lubricants provide
inner wire lubricity to allow the wires to move uniformly like a well oiled
machine.
The penetrating ability of these oils has two disadvantages the first is their nature
to drip out of the wire rope immediately following application and second is their thin
film provides temporary corrosion protection requiring frequent reapplication.
High Viscosity Greases
Greases provide greater corrosion protection than thin penetrating oils, however their
lack of penetration into the wire rope or structural strand hinders internal wire
lubrication, corrosion protection or visual inspection during field applications.
Moving wire ropes may allow some greases to work their way into the wire rope strands
over time; however inspection of all wire ropes is very important.
Wire Rope Cleaner for Socketing Applications
Wire rope cleaner / degreaser formulated to replace chlorinated and petroleum solvent
cleaners for cleaning wire ropes prior to socketing. Approved for both epoxy and zinc
sockets. Wire rope cleaning directions.
